Wall of GriefMarimba 1 (4-octave) (doubling Glockenspiel) | Marimba 2 (4-octave) | Marimba 3 (4.5-octave)An ensemble of three marimba units commissioned by marimba player Mariko Matsumoto, who lives in Nara prefecture.The music was inspired by the paintings of the painter Kunio Matsuiwa. Five works were selected from Matsuiwa’s pieces that depict a fantastic world with a freewheeling idea and composed to perform as a suite “Mythos Legend” with three marimbas (Movement 3 is Glockenspiel and two marimbas). Each painting has a title, and the title is one of the clues to understand the picture, but the music directly expresses the impression received from the image of the painting. This work is a collaboration of painting and music.Composed in 2003. Premiered at Yamato Koriyamajo Hall Main Hall “Mariko Matsumoto Family Concert” on November 3rd of the same year.
